Global organisations from public and private sector spheres expressed mixed feelings on cloud computing adoption according to a survey examining how they are dealing with IT changes.
Security software company, Symantec conducted the 2011 State of the Cloud survey on 5300 global organisations, with approximately six per cent from the public sector, about 320 government organisations and about 350 organisations based in Australia.
Symantec group president, enterprise products and services, Francis deSouza said security is one of the top concerns for organisations moving to the cloud.
“To be confident in the cloud, IT organisations must take measures to ensure they have the same visibility and control of their information and applications whether they are in the cloud or residing on their own infrastructure,” Mr deSouza said.
Symantec director of specialist solutions, Sean Kopelke said many organisations responded that reality was not meeting expectations in moving to the cloud.
“We asked these organisations before they embarked on this project what were their expectations from agility, efficiency and security points of view,” Mr Kopelke said.
According to Mr Kopelke, the results were at about 80 per cent who had “fairly high expectations”.
“Once they actually completed those projects, we saw that number reduce by about 20 to 30 per cent down to the high fifties,” he said.
He said that statistic still means over half of organisations are meeting their goals realising the goals they expect.
“That will change over time because a lot of organisations don’t have the experience in building out these large scale projects in entering the private cloud or dealing with moving into that space,” Mr Kopelke said.
He said 84 per cent of organisations expected a reduction in cost effectiveness around their operational expenses and only 52 per cent came back and said they actually did realise those goals by the time they finished the project.
“So once they have more experience in moving their infrastructure towards the cloud, they’ll have different expectations based on their experiences,” Mr Kopelke said.
Mr Kopelke said information sharing on the cloud is an issue for many government organisations is making sure whoever they work with actually provides that infrastructure and service.
